Does this have to be plugged in all the time, or can it run off the battery until the battery dies?

Coop Controls kits are designed to charge your battery with either Solar or AC via a transformer and some 16 gauge stranded, 2 conductor wire (sold separately). If you lose power to the opener it will continue to operate as long as the battery still has a charge. We do recommend you always have your battery connected to a charging source as repeatedly discharging the battery will significantly shorten its life.
