What does this sensor sense? Why does it trigger on dogs?

Is the "Sensor" just a pressure switch that you have to run over to make contact?

The sensor create a magnetic field and senses a disruption in the field. Often times if the sensor can pickup metal in an animal collar or hoof or even steel toed shoes on a person. Alternatively, the ground may be unstable particularly after a rain and creating a disturbance by stepping directly on the ground above the ground could be causing enough disruption to create an opening.
